Author, photographer and adventurer, Steve Van Beek will introduce you to a Bangkok you will not meet anywhere else. Like Atlantis in reverse, Bangkok’s rise from the “Sea of Mud” 1,500 years ago gave little hint of the heights to which it would ascend.

In story and pictures, we look at the city’s evolution as well as some of the oddities that could only happen in Bangkok including how armored trams were employed as tanks to break up a tong war in Chinatown and the wild, wild East of Sampeng and its casinos, opium dens, and “green lantern” houses.

Steve is the author of Bangkok Only Yesterday, Bangkok Then and Now and Slithering South, a book about his travels down the Chao Phraya River in a canoe.
